General characteristics
Van Tulsi (Oregano) is a bushy, woody shrub growing to 2’ in height with spreading stems and branches. Some cultivars grow in mound-like mats spreading by underground rhizomes, while others form more upright plants. The aromatic leaves are fuzzy and oval-shaped. They attain a length of 1.5”. Throughout the summer Oregano bears tiny purple tube-shaped flowers that are about 1/8” long. They form on leafy bracts that resemble little pinecones.
Medicinal Benefits/ Uses
It is used in treatment of colds, influenza, mild feverish illnesses, indigestion, stomach upsets and painful menstruation. It is strongly sedative and should not be taken in large doses, though mild teas have a soothing effect and aid restful sleep. Externally, it is used to treat bronchitis, asthma, arthritis and muscular pain. It’s oil frequently relieves the pain of toothache and is used in aromatherapy to treat the same kinds of complaints that the herb is used for.
